Teachers' perspectives and Practices in Teaching English Pronunciation at Menglish Center

Abstract

The unintelligibility of Vietnamese learners' English pronunciation has caused hindrances to their academic and career goals. Due to a lack of pronunciation-oriented lessons in the curriculum of junior, senior high schools, and even tertiary schools, teachers at English centers are supposed to provide their students with pronunciation training. This study aims to find out how English pronunciation is taught at an English center and accordingly what teachers think about their pronunciation teaching in terms of the role and goal of pronunciation, time allocation, and techniques. Data were collected from individual interviews with three teachers at MEnglish center and six classroom observations at the level of Foundation (IELTS band score 1.0 – 3.0) and Ground floor (IELTS band score 3.0-4.0). Findings from this study indicate the necessity of time contribution, corrective feedback and affirm the essential role of authentic materials.

  • Tran Xuan Quoc, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, University of Social Sciences and Humanities

    Tran Xuan Quoc is the first author of the study. He is an English teacher with 3 years of experience, particularly specialized in preparing students for IELTS. He has a deep interest in teaching the four skills, particularly receptive skills. Pragmatics is also a field for which he holds a growing passion.

  • Vo Que Thanh, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNUHCM-USSH)

    Vo Que Thanh has got 5 years of teaching experience in English Centers.  She specializes in pronunciation training for adults and preparing for Young Learners English Tests (YLE). Currently, she is joining Master degree program at Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam to enhance the knowledge of teaching methodology and linguistics.  

  • Truong Dinh Minh Dang, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, University of Social Sciences and Humanities

    Truong Dinh Minh Dang is currently pursuing her higher education by joining Master degree course at Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam. She has more than two-year experience in teaching English for various levels of students. Her research interest is mainly related to teaching methodology in reading and writing classes and linguistics comparative analysis between Vietnamese and other languages.

  • Nguyen Dao Ngoc Mai, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, University of Social Sciences and Humanities

    Nguyen Dao Ngoc Mai is a second-year of her MA at USSH. She has started teaching at an English center for 2 years. Her main research interest centers on how teachers participate and integrate English into their lessons. For her M.A thesis, she wanted to have a better understanding of students' and teachers' beliefs about teaching strategies.

  • Pham Ngoc Khoi Nguyen, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, University of Social Sciences and Humanities

    Pham Ngoc Khoi Nguyen is an English teacher. He loves applying the skills and knowledge he has acquired from his M.A. classroom to master the roles of a teacher. He excels in interacting and supporting students with a range of abilities in their lessons and activities thanks to his behavior management strategies.
